Living a Very Long Time

Genesis 5

I am fascinated by the longevity of those who lived up until the days of Noah. I think this gives me a glimpse of what the Millenium will be like. At that time, when Jesus sets up an earthly political rule, people will also live a very long time.

I see an abundance of God’s grace in this chapter. First, although Adam was destined to die, it didn’t happen right away. Adam lived just shy of 1,000 years. Seeing such longevity, I wonder about the relationship between living righteously apart from the law has with living long and healthy.

Second, God allowed people to share in the process of creating life. Also, they were healthy enough to have children even though some were older than 500.

I want to live a long productive life. I won’t make it to 900, of course. But, to be productive for a long time is my goal. My theory is that if I live righteously by faith in Jesus Christ apart from the twin bondages of the law and indulgence, I should be just fine.
